Arcade Awesomeness with Xbox Live
February 27, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Many people are dismissive of the downloadable games that are available on the consoles, as it is relatively new to this generation of consoles. When people see games for $10 - $20 (roughly £5 - £10) they expect it to be an inferior game, whereas if they save up for a $50 - $60 game, they have something that is worth their money. However, as a gamer yourself, you know that this isn't always true. Here we have 3 of the best downloadable games available from the XBLA on the Xbox 360.
#3: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
After successful iterations on both the Nintendo DS and the PSP, Puzzle Quests developers decided to port the excellent puzzle game to the Xbox 360, so it is now formatted to your TV and is shown in glorious HD.
Puzzle Quest combines role-playing and puzzle solving skillfully into a demanding and enthralling game that you won’t be able to put down. You navigate through a World-Map, exploring, talking to people and accepting quests, gaining experience, leveling-up, as well as gaining new equipment. But where the game gets really engaging is when you build your own city and attack surrounding enemy fortifications.
Lastly, there is the combat itself, this is a mash between Bejeweled and Final Fantasy. In each fight, you put your strengths and your opponent’s weaknesses to your advantage, as you and your opponent perform actions on the same Bejeweled-like board. Simply put, you move the pieces around until you line up skulls and do damage to your opponent. You can also perform spells, as well as other moves, which is determined by your character's profession and level. If you are into addictive games, then you can go wrong with Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.
#2: Portal: Stay Alive
Portal: Stay Alive is an expansion on the original game Portal (the download includes Portal too). If your head has been in the clouds for the past couple of years, Portal is a first person puzzle game created using the Half-Life 2 Source engine, and was released as part of Valves, The Orange Box. The game consists of mind-warping puzzles that you must get your head around to solve, with the help of your trusty portal gun. Portal: Stay Alive is, admittedly, short, however it is cheap and still remains one of the most engaging game out there. You must play Portal, period!
#1: Braid
Braid received massive amounts of attention from the press after its release on XBLA. To its credit, it deserved every bit of it. Perhaps the thing Braid was praised most for was its story, but this was not the only thing Braid has going for it. Braid was specifically designed to pose some very complex and intricate puzzles, in a way that is not frustrating for the player to solve.
Your main ability to help you solve these puzzles, is the ability to manipulate the flow of time, and is essential for solving certain puzzles. Each world in the game provides a different variation of this mechanic and the way you control it to keep the challenge the whole way through.
The game consists of five worlds in all, each containing 12 puzzles. It is not necessary to complete all 60 puzzles, however, it is highly recommended to, as it unlocks an ending that must be seen.

Sonic Revived?
February 25, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
The Sonic franchise has long been a gaming stalwart, giving rise to one of modern cultures most recognisable videogame characters and spanning several gaming generations and consoles. The first two or three Sonic games were extemely popular and well loved, cementing the character as the poster boy for Sega. However, as time went on sonic struggled to get to grips with new technology, as the side scrolling formula gave way to 3D adventures, Sonic lost his footing and declined in popularity. Some say the games were overly ambitious and frenetic, overloading the screen with visuals and gameplay too difficult to follow. The latest Sonic Unleashed game hoped to right some of these wrongs and return Sonic to the top, but it met with nonplussed reviews.
However, Sega refuse to let the old hero go out without a fight, and the Wii exclusive game Sonic and the Black Knight looks like it just may be a game that succeeds in a few vital areas where the rest have failed. Dispensing with the repetitive storylines of the past, namely dredging up the villain Dr Robotnic again and again, Sonic is summoned by the wizard Merlina in her time of great need. This attracts the attention of a fresh new antagonist; The Black Knight.

Another area in which the new game hopes to improve upon Unleashed is the combat. Unleashed featured Sonic turning into a hulking 'Werehog' in a gambit which Sega hoped would be the key selling point. Instead, this feature was heavily criticised, as gamers didn't take well to their usually spritely and lightning fast hero being reduced to a slow, cumbersome monster. In Black Knight, Sonic wields a sword which he can use whilst on the trot, giving rise to highly inventive gameplay as you speed through levels and dispatch foes in one fluid motion. As Unleashed was a game that had been ported to the Wii, the motion controls struggled with the system and most gamers simply opted for using a joypad. This isn't a problem for The Black Knight, as being a Wii exclusive the controls have been developed and mastered from the outset.
Will Sonic and the Black Knight restore the age old franchise to its former glory, or will it be just another disappointment in a long line of lacklustre titles? We only have a couple of weeks to wait and see...

Console Buying Guide
February 25, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
With a number of console giants available on the current market, it can be a daunting task choosing one as a gift for someone else. Whilst most of the top three consoles share a lot of games and features, there are certain important aspects that also set them apart. Here we present a quick guide to buying the right console as a gift for someone you know.
One of the first things to consider is not just the starting cost, but also the long term cost of a console. Game and accessory prices for consoles are steadily on the rise, with most new Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 games starting out at around £40. The Wii offers games slightly cheaper, but tends to utilize a number of add-ons and inclusive packs that can add to the base price. Most add ons for consoles are not compulsory and so wouldn't normally need to be considered, but with the Wii some of the best games need a number of specific controllers and add ons from the outset.
You may also want to consider gthe recipient, and the type of gaming console that may best suit them. Nintendo have always held a family friendly policy, favouring games that are low on violence and instead concentrating on game that appeal to a younger audience. This isn't to say that mature content isn't available to the Wii, it's just on a smaller scale. Conversely, the Xbox and Playstation counterparts are much more geared towards catering for the mature gamer, with popular yet violent titles such as Gears of War and Resistance.
Is the recipient a fan of any particular developer of company? If he has experience with games on older Nintendo systems, the games on Wii like Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3 may be familiar and fun. However, if he's allowed to play more violent games and enjoys shooters and whatnot, the Xbox 360 has a better offering in that area. Not that he won't find good shooters on the Wii, but they are not as readily available as on the 360, or the PS3 for that matter.
All three consoles have access to online play and additional content that can be downloaded through a console specific marketplace. Most additional and downloadable content comes a small cost. However, whereas gaming online with the Playstation 3 is completely free, the Xbox requires a subscription fee which is renewed every few months. Over time this charge can start to mount up, and seems ludicrous when compared to the Playstation equivalent which is free of charge.
Lastly, it's worth considering taking out some form of care plan for your new console. Xbox 360 in particular has been plagued with bugs and breakdowns since its release, and has become somewhat infamous in that area. It is an extra cost, but offers better peace of mind when you know that great big expensive piece of hardware is at least covered.

Wii Love Racing!
February 24, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Since the release of the Wii, the console has struggled to promote an appealing range of racing games. Some teething problems in getting to grips with the motion sensors and other controller orientated troubles led the racing genre to have a slow start on the Wii. However, over time developers have got to grips with the new system and some truly great games have surfaced. Here we list three of the best;
Excite Truck was one of the Wii's launch games, and one of the few early racers to actually get it right. This game is so much fun it still stands amongst our top racing games. Whilst this title doesn't offer any multiplayer options, it instead provides a rip-roaring racing experience, wherein sheer, unadulterated speed is the law. The game, as with most other Wii racing titles, is played with the Wii remote. The remote is held in a horizontal position in front of the player and tilted from side to side to steer. Pressing the D-pad engages your boost, which can be activated at any time but will overheat and slow down your engine if overused.
The visuals are breathtaking, and the gameplay may seem a bit one-note, but then isnt that what most racing games are about?
Next up we have Need for Speed Carbon, which builds upon the ideals of this being a street racing game. This title incorporates car shop and customization options, street car races, and police car chases into the usual mix. Being able to customize your car’s paint job, engine, etc. alone make this a very replayable game, and the races themselves are everything we’ve come to expect from the Need For Speed series; fast, furious and utterly enjoyable.
And finally, of course, we have Mario Kart Wii. This game actually offers a total of four different control schemes, first is the aforementioned Wii remote. The game comes with a “Wii Wheel”, for inserting the remote inside for easier handling. The second is the Wii “remote & nunchuk” scheme, where the game is controlled as you would normally play a game after inserting the nunchuk into the remote. Also, the game is compatible with both Gamecube and Classic Controllers.
Mario Kart also offers online multiplayer options. This is possibly the most enjoyable online game ever to be played, and it quickly becomes clear that Mario Kart was MADE for multiplayer. It's just that much fun! Throw in motorcycle racing which offersa fresh spin on the classic kart-racing gameplay, and you have a truly complete racing package.

First Person Shooters For You!
February 24, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
First Person Shooter is one of the most popular gaming genres out there. Every time a shooter comes out on the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, or PC, we expect more and more in terms of graphics, story and gameplay. In a rapidly growing genre, it pays to know the best from the rest, so we're here to help!
Here are five shooters on the PS3 that blew gamers away.
#5: Far Cry 2
This sequel to the original game has been a long time coming, with years between releases, and this latest venture has done much to improve on the franchise. Far Cry 2 offers a satisfyingly lengthy single player campaign and impressive multiplayer. Stealth is the ploy here, as you creep around heavy forest and jungle settings to catch sentries off guard. The Far Cry series is looking better than ever, and is a must for FPS fans.

#4: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
While the first three Call of Duty games were strictly WWII shooters, 4 took an interesting turn with modern warfare. Single player campaign is a little on the short side, but there's plenty of reason to come back for solid online multiplayer. But one of the most noteworthy aspects of the game is the Call of Duty 4 Engine. In the game's detailed maps, it's possible to shoot a small, empty can lying on the ground and watch it bounce and roll. Also, shoot a car in the right spot and it will explode in a gorgeous display of realism.

#3: The Orange Box
The Orange Box is perhaps the best purchasing deal in gaming history. The package includes Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 expansion episodes 1 and 2, online multiplayer mod Team Fortress 2, and a game made from the Half-Life 2 engine called Portal. So that's five games for the price of one- not bad eh?
As is usual for the series, Half-Life 2 follows scientist Gordan Freeman trying to survive after an outbreak of deadly creatures; the results of science experiments gone very wrong. The entire game takes place from a first-person perspective, as our hero tries to put things right and escape the hell-hole all at once.
Team Fortress 2 is simply a multiplayer mod, with different character classes and abilities. The grahpics have been shaken up a bit this time around, going for a more cartoony, cell-shaded look, a trend that seems to be popular in current gaming.
The last game the package features is Portal, a strange concoction of FPS and puzzle game. Meet the portal gun, which you use to teleport objects and yourself between certain areas. You don't have to be a fan of puzzle games to enjoy this, even if it technically is one. It has to be seen to be believed.

#2: Bioshock
Hailed for its dark and immersive storyline, BioShock takes you deep into the forboding and dangerous world of Rapture. Bioshock combines all the key gaming elements you could want, from pulse- pounding action, wide exploration and intriguing puzzles. The PS3 verson also secures exclusive content and a new difficulty setting. Now, go play it!

#1: Resistance 2
A Playstation exclusive from celebrated developers Insomniac, our top choice here is Resistance 2. The first game's storyline invloved an alternate timeline where instead of WWII taking place, an alien species invaded earth.
With the threat returning once again, Resistance 2 throws you into two gratifying campaigns, alwell as offering the mandatory multiplayer options. Resistance 2's online multiplayer takes the biscuit though, offering a much smoother flowing gameplay than any other around.
With Resistance 2 currently ruling the roost, it can't be long until another title ccomes along in this increasingly popular genre.

February 21, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Lets take a look back at 2008 and rate the best games to have graced the Wii console- a perfect checklist for if you missed any of these must have games!

In it, the player stars as a small, colorful blob in a world being taken over by Nazi-esque gray blobs, bent on ridding the world of color forever. Your objective is basically to go from level to level, plopping yourself into different colors of paint and spreading color across a dull, gray city. This game supports multiplayer you so and your friends can get involved in the messy action!

#4: Guitar Hero World Tour
The fourth installment in this global phenomenon brings is doubtless the best so far, especially for the Wii. Introducing downloadable content to the mix, World Tour allows four way play online and supports Mii tour, adding a cute yet extremely addictive option to the guitar strumming mayhem! Throw in all the usual perks and excellence associated with the earlier games and you have an extremely worthy package!

#3: Mario Kart Wii
This major franchise needs little introduction, With Mario and friends now having rampaged in their cute little karts across the years and consoles! This latest installment for the Wii introduces a mix up on the vehicles, allowing some players to utilize bikes, and also introduces online play to the game. This function has won wide critical acclaim, with Mario Kart being an extremely popular and crowd pleasing title, bringing the action online is a master stroke.

#2: No More Heroes
Here's a game for the more mature Wii players out there, as you take control of the supremely named Travis Touchdown, a canny fellow who happened to secure himself a lightsaber over the internet! He then takes a part time job as an assassin, offing the top ten hired killers in the business.

Traversing an open ended world either by foot or by motorcycle, the fighting in this title is fast, frantic and combo-orientated. Players also make extensive use of the Wii remote to grapple and deal with foes close up.
No More Heroes is a great achievement and a must-have for those who have been waiting for the mature experience on the Wii.
#1: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Another Mario title here, and its no secret that we love this game. The latest in the Super Smash series sees a large number of popular characters return to the mayhem.
Much like other reiterations on the Wii, Brawl is the first in the series to support online play, a feature that fans have been crying out for for years. And it doesn't dissapoint- there's nothing quite like pummeling those cute and cuddly characters whilst imagining some guy screaming at the screen from half way across the world!

Battle of the Console Giants
February 17, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
The current console war is more hotly contested than ever before during the 7th generation of gaming. The console giants currently battling for domination are the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 ans Nintendo Wii. So, how do you find out which one is right for you? Well, you compare. We will start with what is probably the most popular of the three, even if it is not the most bestselling.
Xbox 360: The first of the seventh generation consoles and arguably the most widespread and popular. The 360 was the first to pioneer the amazing and groundbreaking graphics we've come to expect from next gen consoles, and also introduced us to Xbox Live, a place to download emulated games and buy additional content for existing games. This has since been imitated by both Sony(Playstation Network) and Nintendo(WiiWare, Virtual Console, and Nintendo Wi-fi Connection). However, both the Sony and Nintendo versions of this function are completely free to use and play, whereas Xbox Users have to first upgrade to a Gold membership, and then pay additional subscription fees. Having to pay for functions that the competition offers for free is a serious mark down for the Xbox 360, however superior this function is claimed to be.
Xbox Live is widely considered superior to both Sony's and Nintendo's online networks. But do a few exclusive features alone justify the cost? Is it worth it? If you think you are an X360 guy, it's something you are going to have to consider carefully, because the cost of such a venture really adds up in the end.
Wii: For the Wii, Nintendo gambled on a completely new gaming direction. Realising that the gaming community is fast paced and fickle, the developers wanted to make a console that would last, and which would not be judged solely for graphics performance. Thus was born the Wii, a console that eschewed graphics dominance in favour of a revolutionary motion control system.
So if you've been playing games a long time, the Wii might be the thing you're looking for. Not only because it provides a refreshingly unique control scheme, but because you probably used to play many of the games now available on the system's online Virtual Console network. NES games, Super NES games, Nintendo 64, you name it. There are even a few Sega Master System and Genesis games, like Sonic The Hedgehog. Many of the games are surprisingly cheap, and can be stored onto an SD memory card. Never got to own all the old Zelda games? Now you can.
The Wii has gained most popularity through being a 'party console', a great interactive experience that brings together friends and family, introducing gaming to those that might never have previously considered it. At the same time, this notion is also what can bring the Wii down in the eyes of certain gamers, viewing the console as something of a novelty item used for throwaway fun rather than serious gaming.
Playstation 3: The Playstation 3, despite having a shakey start with a host of lacklustre games, is really starting to come into its own. Generally perceived to be the best technological investment amongst the consoles, the Playstation 3 offers a wealth of functions all built into one station.
Each PS3 contains a built-in Cell Processor at 3.2 Gigahertz. It has the potential to process information at a speed unlike any other console. Not only that, but the PS3's Blu-ray discs can hold up to 50 GB. That means it's game's also have the potential to contain almost four times more information than any other console's discs.
The PS3 also has a built in Blu ray DVD player, the home movie system successor to the DVD players of today. Blu-Ray may not be so widespread at this time, but over the next couple of years the system is set to take over , in the same way that DVD took over the VHS market. The Playstation 3 really does need to be coupled with a HDTV to get the full effect from the console, displaying the maginificent games and movies the way they should be seen.
All three systems are extremely powerful and popular consoles, and so deciding between them really is a matter of choice. Take a look at the games they offer, the functions they utilize, and decide which best suits you!

The Best in Wii Ports
February 4, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Since its release the Wii has gained popularity in many areas, including successfully porting a number of gaming favourites from other consoles onto their system. In doing so, they take an already well established title and add the Wii twist, incorporating their unique control system and additional features. Listing here are a few of the best ported titles for the system.
Prince of Persia: Rival Swords
One of the first Wii ports to effectively implement the Wii motion controls, Prince of Persia chronicles the latest adventure of the titular character. Besides being able to manipulate time, run up and across walls, kill using stealth, and pull off crazy combat combos, the main hook in the gameplay is being able to turn into Prince's alter ego, Dark Prince, at certain intervals.
Dark Prince is a more powerful, agile version of Prince. The downside is that there is a sand meter constantly going while you're in this state, and in order to keep it full and avoid dying, you have to keep on the move, killing monsters and absorbing their sand.
The Wii version is identical in terms of content, except for the controls. While the initial version would have you simply press the attack button to come up behind an enemy and perform a stealth kill, in the Wii version you manipulate the nunchuk in varying ways to dispatch your foe. The new controls provide a fresh, more exciting way to play the game.
Okami is an action-adventure originally released in 2006, starring the sun goddess Amataresu, who journeys in the form of a white wolf. The game boasts a long, japanese myth-driven story, plenty of characters and side-quests, and a whole lot of style.
The Wii version incorporated motion controls in the usual areas, like combat, but also in the area of the main character's "Celestial Brush".
The Celestial Brush is a magical paintbrush the sun goddess uses to manipulate the world around her. Using the Wii remote, players could now wield the brush themselves, making the proper motions to solve certain puzzles and launch attacks. Utilizing this new and innovative perk, Okami has found its true home in the shape of the Wii.
Resident Evil 4 was a gamble in that Capcom chose to take the familiar and loved gaming mechanics of the franchise in a different direction, offering new targeting options and settings. The game is viewed as a massive success however, and so the gamble was well played.
One of the reasons the game is so intense is that in RE4, you can't shoot while moving. Instead, you must stand still and position yourself, hold down a button to raise your gun, and fire once your enemy is in your sights. With the Wii Remote, the shooting is dramatically more accurate, and the time it takes to aim your weapon much shorter. The result is a superior, appealing control scheme.
The story involves a european religious cult that has kidnapped the United States President's daughter. But what really counts in this kind of game is the gameplay.
The shooting action that RE4 is all about has been perfected, with extremely accurate pointer and motion controls, and the Wii version has been heralded as the best way to play Resident Evil.

Wii Must-Have Games!
February 3, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Wii Must-Have Games!
Need some gaming inspiration? Try picking up these hugely popular games for the Wii
Medal of Honor has always been lauded for bringing gritty realism to the first person shooter, and this outing on the Wii makes no exception. The game features online multiplayer and two single-player modes: Arcade and Campaign, both boasting fast-paced and highly replayable WWII shooting action.
#4: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
The newest Zelda is bigger and better than ever before. The new visual style harkens back to the N64 games, with realistic character models and environments, versus the cell-shaded ones in Legend of Zelda: Windwaker on the Gamecube. Add to this an unbelievably huge and immersive world, cinematic presentation and an epic storyline, and you get yet another legendary Zelda game.
#3: Mario Kart Wii
Since the hazy days of the SNES, Mariokart has been a fan favourite throughout all the ages and incarnations of Nintendo's consoles. Renowned for its deep combat-racing gameplay, the Wii remote's motion controls are surprisingly well utilized for this game. Those die hard fans of the old format can still use Gamecube and Classic Controllers however. Another fun feature worth mentioning is the ability to transport Mii's onto the game and using them as racing characters.
Smash Bros. is commonly recognized as one of the best fighting game franchises ever, and Brawl is no exception. The game's multiplayer is for up to four players, all of which are dropped on a two-dimensional "stage", the objective being to send all the other players flying off. The roster itself offers videogame classics; If Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog were to face off, who would win? Now we can find out.
Mario returns, bringing with him a platformer many are claiming to be the best yet for the franchise. The graphics are some of the best the Wii has to offer, and the gameplay features new and innovative mechanics. The most prominent of these is the planet physics that take place as you leap between floating spheres and other objects in outer-space. This and the spectactular visuals showcased in each of the game's fabulous worlds make this a title you cannot afford to miss.
All the above titles are perfect for either playing alone or getting together with your friends for a gaming session, with the multiplayer options offering hours of crazy fun!

Nintendo Wii- The Place for First Person Shooters?
February 3, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Nintendo Wii- The Place for First Person Shooters?
When considering the possible success of new games, two factors rank highly; graphics and innovation. Whilst both important, some develops will often rank one higher than the other. We're living in an age wherein awesome graphics are no longer able to completely carry a game; innovation and gameplay are just as important. Moreover, no matter how well a game plays, it can be let down by graphics that would look at home on consoles from years ago. So, the question is, which should take precedence?
Nintendo, for example, favors innovation because they have been in the business for many years and believe that while gamers will always come to expect better and better graphics, engaging gameplay is paramount to the gaming experience. Developers such as Epic, on the other hand, seem to believe that gameplay will continue to be presentable enough through better and better graphics. Perhaps, in a way, both insights are true. But should first-person shooter developers be concentrating solely on graphically powerful consoles like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3? Whatever your thoughts, here are a few reasons why the future of shooters is, arguably, the Nintendo Wii.
The Wii is advanced far ahead of the competition. The technology powering the Wii Remote takes gaming to a whole new level. Nothing this major has taken place in video game history for years, and the recently announced MotionSense attachment will make the controller even more accurate. The user experience is only going to improve over time. MotionSense, also known as MotionSense Plus, will result in more realistic game play by enhancing the accuracy and sensitivity of the Wii controller.
The Wii is accessible, and its shooters are easier to pick up and play than on any other console. The controls utilized through the Wii allow for greater responsive and cognitive control, growing to rival the aiming precision of the PC itself. A video game console has never been this close to surpassing the PC in this area.
There is much more to the motion-sensing technology than is immediately apparent. Games with motion sensing are simply more realistic and enjoyable to play than those without. This is true because the motion sensing technology mimics real life, whether a first person shooter or other type of video game.
Making motions in real-life that directly correspond to the display on the TV is the most revolutionary and innovative step we have seen in the home gaming market for a long, long time. The motion sensing technology in the Wii increases the connection between gamer and game, resulting in a rich user experience that makes it very difficult to return to the "old" way of playing.
And so once again, it is the innovation and reactive gameplay of the Wii that puts the console at the forefront of the competition. If you want to actually feel as if you're part of the first person shooter, then the Wii is the place to be!
