The End Of The Xbox Halo Franchise As We Know It

February 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Halo: Reach is the forthcoming (and final) chapter from current developer studio Bungie, bringing to an end their reign over the Xbox Halo franchise. Set in 2552 on the human planet Reach, and players once more adopt the Spartan colours as Noble 6 and, along with Noble Squad, the gamer will have to defend their planet from the terror that is the Covenant. However, Halo: Reach is a prequel to Bungie's first award winning "Halo: Combat Evolved" title.

Originally designed to be an improved version of the Xbox Halo franchise entry Halo 3, the notion was dropped, Bungie stating they would redesign and improve the quality of the Halo 3 designs. Harking back to the Halo: Combat Evolved concept ideas, this effectively means the new weapon, armour and covenant designs in Halo: Reach will deviate greatly from prior entries but uphold the ethos of the Xbox Halo franchise.

Hinting that Bungie will not cap the Xbox Halo franchise without a bang, the producers are looking to dramatically increase the graphical quality of all gaming areas, even including the weaponry. This clearly required Bungie to create a fresh new engine in Halo: Reach, with the AI augmented and nudged to provide better support for the player as they battle the Covenant.

So after all these promises of fusing greatly refined graphics and improved AI and designs, will Bungie leave the Xbox Halo franchise with a bang and cement their reputation for producing the best FPS for the Xbox 360? The only way to find out is to grab a copy when it is released later this year!

Xbox 360 Virtual Arcade!

January 28, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Microsoft are continually venturing to make the Xbox Live experience as fun and interactive as they can for existing users and newcomers to the system. As the possibilities grow, Microsoft are able to promote various awesome features online, such as Twitter, Sky and Netfix. Amongst the noteworthy and exciting approaching projects is Xbox 360 virtual arcade, which is garnering much excitement from users.

Microsoft are building upon the ability to play classic games online by developing the new Xbox 360 virtual arcade. The intention is to re-introduce certain titles which many older and sentimental game-players would like to revisit. Whilst a lot of those games may appear simplistic or maybe comical to the audience of today, Microsoft state that many are still awesome titles worth looking into.

Examples of the titles lined up for this feature include such classics as Rocket Knight, Centipede, Streets of Rage and even fan fave Asteroids. These games will mean absolutely everything to those players who grew up with them, and offer a nice aside to the bigger games of our day. The Xbox 360 virtual arcade even offers gamers their very own interactive arcade room. When a player buys one of these classic titles, they are able to place it anywhere in the arcade, and they even appear in the classic arcade machines!

Lastly, Microsoft's new feature is completely interactive, so gamers can ask their buddies to visit and play in their own arcade. Voice chat is included together with avatars, leaderboards, multiplayer features and more. In exchange for Microsoft points you are able to forge your very own Xbox 360 virtual arcade, and sample some classic games with your pals!

A Sneak peek At The Xbox 360 Project Natal

January 19, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Following hot on the heels of the Wii's motion sensing technology, Microsoft hope to take this one better with Xbox 360 Project Natal. Revealed during 2009's E3 meeting, this add-on accessory for the Xbox 360 is said to allow completely controller-free interaction with games, sensing movement and translating that as controls in the title.

Xbox 360 Project Natal is said to be available around the end of 2010, and Microsoft hope that the accessory will become a vital part of all existing Xbox consoles. They also confirm that this revolutionary technology will stretch the active life of the 360 considerably, and is, for all intents and purposes, a next-gen accessory.

The accessory includes a depth sensor coupled with an RGB camera, which hands the Xbox 360 Project Natal a 360 degree arc of recognition. The recognition is so cutting edge that even tiny facial expressions can be interpreted and converted on-screen. The range of recognition can also be extended or shortened as the gamer wishes, with the possibility of including surrounding objects like tables or cabinets.

Along with movement, the Xbox 360 Project Natal also has the ability to interpret sound. The multi-array microphone within can be employed to recognise sound and relay vocal information on the television. These elements mix to offer total interactivity between gamer and videogame.

As the technology employed to create both Natal and the titles it will interact with is reasonably unique, Microsoft have said that current Xbox 360 titles probably will not support Natal, and that a brand new range of titles are in progress. Some technical demos shown at E3 saw Space Invaders Extreme and Paint Party, a game in which pots of paint are manipulated by the gamer to paint canvasses.

Time will tell as to whether the Xbox 360 Project Natal will instill the awe Microsoft are looking for. Whilst the specs are clearly revolutionary and due to trump even the Wii's signature card, Microsoft need to announce more engaging titles to gain increased customer interest. With the right titles coupled with it, the Xbox 360 Project Natal could actually be the future of videogaming!

Great Upcoming Titles For Sony Playstation 3

August 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

2008 was a superb year for the Sony PlayStation 3. After three years of being beaten up by its competitors, the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360, the PS3 rebounded with robust exclusives and verified hits like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet.

What's in store for the Sony Playstation 3 in the months to come? Will the schedule of PS3 releases continue the momentum established by the company in 2008? Will the rest of 2009, and even 2010, be the period when Sony regains the throne it was compelled to surrender and actually realize some profit for their video game console? Here's a look at what we have to look forward to;

1. God of War III. Of all of the PS3 releases forthcoming, this is the surest hit. Kratos is too much of a tough guy to be considered as a mascot, and his journeys aren't always what we can consider as 'wholesome'. Nevertheless, God of War III is THE PS3 release that is destined to sell a large amount of games and units alike.

2. DC Universe online . Think of a constant world where you may either hero or villain, interacting with other real players playing popular characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the likes. It's a PS3 release worth waiting for.

3. Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves. The first Uncharted was a sleeper hit for Sony. The second one will be 20 times better, and with multi-player action to boot.

4. EyePet. This PS3 release will be a do or die for the EyeToy peripheral. The last ( and only ) game that employed the accessory was Eye of Judgment. Will a virtual pet-style title be sufficient to make the peripheral a sound investment for PS3 owners?

5. Gran Turismo 5. Presuming it is released. As it stands, GT5 should have been delivered two years ago.

Keep your eyes peeled for these great titles and many more, coming to the Sony Playstation 3 soon!

Top Selling Playstation 3 Games

July 28, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Numbers don't lie. Rather than counting on subjective reviews, a lot of video gamers often observe the sales charts to figure out whether or not a specific software title is worth the purchase.

This is particularly true for owners of  PlayStation 3 consoles.

With the vast amount of games available for the Playstation 3, finding the right title worthy of a $50 to $60 investment can prove to be quite a daunting task. Fortunately, the cream always rises on top of the sales charts.

So, what are highest selling games for the Sony PS3 console? Here are the top seven of the list :

1. MotorStorm. Alas, the benefits of being a launch title! MotorStorm won over a group that hotly contested the release of the PS3 console with its surprisingly pragmatic graphics and superb action. Number of copies sold : 3.31 million.

2. Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriots. Konami's smash hit franchise continued on the PS3 console, and sales immediately followed suit. MGS4 is the game in Hideo Kojima's legendary series that sold the greatest number of copies within a particularly short period. It was actually the first software title that essentially brought about a rise in PS3 console sales. Number of copies sold : more than 3 million.

3. Grand Theft Auto 4. It isn't an exclusive, but the PS3 console was a favorite system for the interest in GTA4. Though the Xbox 360 version displayed better graphics, people preferred to play a lengthy game like this on a console that won't collapse because of some unknown cause. Number of copies sold : 2.7 million.

4. Uncharted : Drake's Fortune. This dark horse of a game surprised everyone by being an instant cult favorite. Number of copies sold : 2.6 million.

5. Resistance : Fall of Man. Many criticised the PS2-esque graphics which totally enfeebled the power possessed by the PS3 console. But again, it was a launch title and people were hungry for exclusive games. The result? Number of copies sold : 2.5 million.

6. Heavenly Sword. There's nothing bad about the game, but there's nothing special about it, either. For an audience starved of a button mashing adventure game for their PS3 consoles, Heavenly Sword was easy to embrace. Number of copies sold : just over a million.

Deadly Creatures!

February 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

If frantic and deadly battles between strange and poisonous creatures sounds like your kind of thing, then upcoming Nintendo Wii game Deadly Creatures may be just for you. In a world short on new and fresh ideas these days, this game presents in interesting and unique take on battles of all shapes and sizes! Presenting a multi-faceted storyline revolving around a Scorpion, Tarantula, and then two men stuck in the desert(voiced by no less than Dennis Hopper and Billy Bob Thornton) searching for someone or something.

Gameplay takes place over ten chapters, jumping between the control of the Tarantula and Scorpion, as each creature offers a different perspective as the story begins to unfold. Taking control of the different creatures will open up new avenues and access to differing areas, as the scorpion takes advantage of his digging skill, and the Tarantula spins webs for access. Throw in a frantic combat system which, for possibly the first time in game history, pits these tiny creatures against each other in a violent struggle for life!

51S4p7y6ffL. SL160 Deadly Creatures!

While the tarantula is fast and excels when it comes to dodging attacks, the scorpion is slow yet powerful, and relies on his blocking abilities to keep attacks at bay. Pressing A delivers a fast attack, whilst shaking the Wii remote will execute a more powerful attack that requires more careful timing. These attacks can be chained together to execute combos, more of which you will unlock as your character levels up. For example, for the tarantula you unlock a poisonous bite, and the ability to squirt webs at enemies and stun them. Also, after stunning an enemy it is possible to perform a finishing move, which will completely defeat your foe if you follow the onscreen prompts exactly.  The results of the execution of these finishing moves are intense, and often bloody, raising this game above the child orientated audience.

Visually this is a rich and immersive game, throwing the players deep into a claustophobic and dark world of constant survival. Add to this the unique and fresh perspective this game takes to gameplay and exploration and you have yourself a title quite unlike any of the usual action fodder that gets thrown around these days. Enjoy!
