Burn Zombie Burn

May 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The latest addition to Sony’s PlayStation Store, Burn Zombie Burn is a deeply addictive game. It much resembles Bizarre Creation’s Geometry Wars and House Marque’s Super Stardust HD in that you face waves of numerous enemies. The only difference is instead of different coloured geometric shapes or asteroids and spaceships, you have to shoot yourself through hordes of zombies!

The basic principle is you have to survive as long as possible by shooting zombies and getting a high multiplier to increase the points you get from each zombie. Sounds easy, yeah? Well there is a slight twist. You do not get multiplier points for killing a certain amount of zombies. No, you get multipliers from burning zombies! You have to set alight zombies with your flaming plank of wood and then blow some zombie brains.

This neat twist by developers Kuju, adds a new element to the game that is not seen in geometry wars or Super Stardust HD. In order to get huge scores, you need to have a group of zombies set alight to get your multiplier up and shoot none burning zombies to get maximum points and drop health pick-ups. Ok that’s fair enough. But burning zombies are much faster and hit harder so much be avoider, and they drop much better goodies but when you kill them your multiplier goes down and you get less points. So when playing you must have a constant balance of burning zombies and normal zombies. This intuitive gameplay element makes this game hugely entertaining, challenging and massively addictive, without it Burn Zombie Burn would be another arcade-style shooter.

As in any zombie shooter, its all about what weapons you have to kill the deadly horde of brain eating zombies. So in the zombie repellent case we have the default pistol and burning plank of wood. As the waves progress, you unlock machine guns, shotguns, TNT, chainsaws, baseball bats, cricket bats, flame-throwers, a brain gun (to distract zombies) and lawnmowers, yes lawnmowers, one of the most effective weapons to plough through a horde of zombies. The more you use each weapon, the more combo points you gain for that weapon. Once you attain 3 combo points for any mixture of weapon you can press a button in the map which will either make it start raining and puts out burning zombies, but increases your score, or sends the zombies into a crazy zombie dance.

Burn Zombie Burn has several two game modes arcade and challenge mode with each having freeplay, timed and defend daisy modes. The first two modes are self explanatory. The Defend Daisy mode sees you defend your girlfriend Daisy who is sitting in your car. You have to keep the zombies away, with burning zombies heal her, but do more damage and you have to keep the TNT away from her as that can hurt her too.

Burn Zombie Burn has a very polished feel to it, and looks brilliant with its cartoon graphics and it’s main protagonist straight from the 1950’s. Burn Zombie Burn sees mindless arcade shooting mixed with strategy and this mix works wonderfully, Kuju really have nailed it perfectly. The weapons, while some are standard zombie killers, are fun and inventive, especially the lawnmower and the various bats. Overall this is a great game to play to blow off some steam and doesn’t need to be taken seriously, unless your after those big scores.

Score: 8 / 10

Burn Zombie Burn is available on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3.

Battle of the Console Giants

February 17, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The current console war is more hotly contested than ever before during the 7th generation of gaming. The console giants currently battling for domination are the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 ans Nintendo Wii. So, how do you find out which one is right for you? Well, you compare. We will start with what is probably the most popular of the three, even if it is not the most bestselling.

Xbox 360: The first of the seventh generation consoles and arguably the most widespread and popular. The 360 was the first to pioneer the amazing and groundbreaking graphics we've come to expect from next gen consoles, and also introduced us to Xbox Live, a place to download emulated games and buy additional content for existing games. This has since been imitated by both Sony(Playstation Network) and Nintendo(WiiWare, Virtual Console, and Nintendo Wi-fi Connection). However, both the Sony and Nintendo versions of this function are completely free to use and play, whereas Xbox Users have to first upgrade to a Gold membership, and then pay additional subscription fees. Having to pay for functions that the competition offers for free is a serious mark down for the Xbox 360, however superior this function is claimed to be.

Xbox Live is widely considered superior to both Sony's and Nintendo's online networks. But do a few exclusive features alone justify the cost? Is it worth it? If you think you are an X360 guy, it's something you are going to have to consider carefully, because the cost of such a venture really adds up in the end.

Wii: For the Wii, Nintendo gambled on a completely new gaming direction. Realising that the gaming community is fast paced and fickle, the developers wanted to make a console that would last, and which would not be judged solely for graphics performance. Thus was born the Wii, a console that eschewed graphics dominance in favour of a revolutionary motion control system.

So if you've been playing games a long time, the Wii might be the thing you're looking for. Not only because it provides a refreshingly unique control scheme, but because you probably used to play many of the games now available on the system's online Virtual Console network. NES games, Super NES games, Nintendo 64, you name it. There are even a few Sega Master System and Genesis games, like Sonic The Hedgehog. Many of the games are surprisingly cheap, and can be stored onto an SD memory card. Never got to own all the old Zelda games? Now you can.

The Wii has gained most popularity through being a 'party console', a great interactive experience that brings together friends and family, introducing gaming to those that might never have previously considered it. At the same time, this notion is also what can bring the Wii down in the eyes of certain gamers, viewing the console as something of a novelty item used for throwaway fun rather than serious gaming.

Playstation 3: The Playstation 3, despite having a shakey start with a host of lacklustre games, is really starting to come into its own. Generally perceived to be the best technological investment amongst the consoles, the Playstation 3 offers a wealth of functions all built into one station.

Each PS3 contains a built-in Cell Processor at 3.2 Gigahertz. It has the potential to process information at a speed unlike any other console. Not only that, but the PS3's Blu-ray discs can hold up to 50 GB. That means it's game's also have the potential to contain almost four times more information than any other console's discs.

The PS3 also has a built in Blu ray DVD player, the home movie system successor to the DVD players of today. Blu-Ray may not be so widespread at this time, but over the next couple of years the system is set to take over , in the same way that DVD took over the VHS market. The Playstation 3 really does need to be coupled with a HDTV to get the full effect from the console, displaying the maginificent games and movies the way they should be seen.

All three systems are extremely powerful and popular consoles, and so deciding between them really is a matter of choice. Take a look at the games they offer, the functions they utilize, and decide which best suits you!

About Playstation Home

Playstation Home is an interactive function utilized on the Playstation 3. It is basically a virtual world wherein the player can customize features and interact with other players. This is a modern realization of “The Getaway Online", originally planned for the Playstation 2, which was cancelled and the idea put on hold. Forms of virtual social networking have become more and more common in consoles, and Sony intends to take things to the next level.

When first announced, there was talk of a full-fledged world with virtual theaters and gaming stores for playing demos, all of which are gradually being realized on the ever-expanding function. These include the ability to buy and personalize your own home, playing a real game through your virtual home, and traversing the virtual world interacting with other users. Both Playstation Network games and games on your hard drive or in your disc drive can be played in Playstation Home.

Users can immediately customize their own avatar, choosing from a wide variety of appearances, clothing and accessories. Next up you’re free to customize your "Home-Space"(typically an apartment room, house, etc.) It's even possible to invite another user to your home and watch streamed videos on your virtual TV, if the video is installed on your hard drive. Also included are functions to upload pictures and hang them on your wall, listen to and show other users your music, and play online games together such as chess and bowling.

Communication between users is handled in a variety of ways including virtual keyboard, USB or Bluetooth keyboard, headset, and emotes: fixed text messages, expressions and emotional displays. The "virtual keyboard" appears onscreen with the press of a button, and players can input text with their controllers. However, it's recommended that you use a keyboard or headset (or both) to take full advantage of the communication aspect of the game.

Additional updates have been confirmed; Sony intends to add pets and additional clothing, amongst other features. The function is entirely free to play, but there will be certain in-game items that can be bought with real money at the Playstation Store. All of these dynamic and innovative functions have helped to make Playstation Home widely popular amongst users.

Reasons why you need Playstation 3 in your life

December 16, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Yeah, we know you don't really need that much persuasion to get a Playstation 3, but for those of you out there that are still unsure about the greatest games console on the market, here are three reasons why you need a PS3 in your life.

Here we are in the seventh generation of console gaming. Currently, the Xbox 360, the Wii, and the PS3 are all in competition. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses, their ups and downs. So, the following article should in no way lead readers to believe that the PS3 is the "best" console, but rather show three reasons why there's never been a better time to have one.

Powerful Hardware: In terms of processing speed, the PS3's hardware has come out on top. The system contains a built-in Cell Processor; a PowerPC-base Core with a processing speed of 3.2GHz. Also, thanks to the system's Blu-ray discs and player, developers can create games holding up to 50 Gigabytes of information. And yes, that's more than what the X360 can do. That's more than ever before, and will be for a long while.

Free Online Network: The Xbox 360's "Xbox Live" network costs $70 to sign up, and $50 to renew your membership every year. Let's say you want to be able to sit down and play an online game on your Xbox whenever you have the whim, so you're going to renew your membership every year. Five years later, you've spent an extra $270 on an already expensive console. On the PS3, it would be 100% free. Ten years later, if you feel like it you can still be playing without paying a dime.

Better Games Than Before: Over the years, the PS3 has been critiscized for it's lack of good games, but it seems now the rate of good games on the platform are rising, now that developers are seeing promise in the console. They've realized that the PS3 has better hardware and a free online network. They know that if the PS3 ends up on top it'll be a good place to be.

Just look at the games that have been coming out: Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Dead Space, Wipeout HD, Ratchet and Clank: Tools for Destruction, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Condemned 2, Resistance 2, not to mention older third-party titles and ports like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance: Fall of Man, Devil May Cry 4, The Darkness, Far Cry 2, Soul Calibur IV, Call of Duty 4, BioShock, FEAR, Fallout 3 etc. Add it all up, and you've got a solid lineup of great games, so the argument that the PS3 doesn't have enough good game isn't valid anymore.

The Playstation 3 really is the all-round enhtertainment centre for your home, and with so many features available it really is an investment that will bring you a great deal of pleasure and countless hours of entertainment. Thumbs at the ready!
