2009: Make or Break for Sony’s Playstation 3
June 18, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Even the die-hard fans would agree, the SonyPlayStation 3 has been trailing the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 in general sales since the day the PS3 was launched. Sony promised consumers that it will regain the market leadership by the end of 2007 - a leadership it once enjoyed with the Playstation 2 ( PS2 ) - but it didn't happen, mainly because of the lack of console-defining exclusives. Sony guaranteed clients that 2008 will be the PS3's year, but this did not materialize, notwithstanding powerful showings from Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) and Little Big Planet.
And now, Sony has once again promised that 2009 will be the glory year of the PS3.
Its patrons are becoming impatient. Industry leaders believe that 2009 is the "make or break" year for the PS3. 2009, they are saying, is the year which will either mark the PS3 as a deserving entry to Sony's series of console excellence, or brand the PS3 as a market failure despite its clearly superior engineering.
For 2009, the PS3 is banking on 5 key titles that it hopes will ultimately bring the console to the head of the sales charts. These games are:
1. Killzone 2. Released last February, Killzone 2 - one of the PS3's most hyped games, that the industry has enthusiastically awaited since 2004 - is well on its way to saving Sony's reputation as a pace-setter in the Playstation game market. The title sold 2,000,000 copies on its first month, a feat that is actually entrancing for a game which is exclusive to a single console.
2. God of War 3. Since its first installment, Kratos has quickly become the poster boy for Sony, and God of War has quickly become the flagship title for the company's gaming division. Remaining a PS exclusive, the franchise remains both Sony's secret weapon and saviour, always guarenteed to bring in phenominal market.
3. Final Fantasy XIII. The PS3 lost big time when Square-Enix decided to publish FFXIII on the Xbox 360 as well, at least in areas outside Japan. The following installment of the blockbuster Final Fantasy series will continue to be exclusive to the PS3 in its country of origin, and this could definitely help boost the sales for the console. Outside Japan, FFXIII may still win some console sales, as the Final Fantasy franchise has long been related to Sony's machines and given the long playtime provided by the game, issues on the Xbox 360's engineering reliability may force buyers to pick the PS3 version.
4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Its predecessor, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, was a dark horse entry, exclusive for the PS3, which wowed casual gamers with fleshed out, likeable characters and immersive gameplay. The follow up, which is claimed to combine elements of Gears of War, Tomb Raider, and FPS multi-player madness, will be even better than the original, and now that gamers know to look out for it, the title looks set to bring in some serious business. Gamers are excited about Uncharted 2, and this will reflect on the PS3 console sales.
5. Massive Action Game (MAG). Forget Resistance two's 64-player team death matches. Prepare for a very wide scale war with MAG, one which will involve up to 256 players at the same time. Little is understood about the game, however. If it lives up to its guarantees, it can be the PS3 title which will make other FPS multi-player games outmoded. If it doesn't, it is going to be the Kane and Lynch of 2009.
Will these games eventually catapult the Sony PS3 to the throne it once owned unchallenged?
Only time, and your good business, will tell.

All About Sony PSP Films Downloading Changing And Transferring
Whats the coolest thing about the Sony Playstation Portable? It's not its engaging design. It is not even the exceptional WiFi connectivity. The sweetest thing about the Sony PSP is its multimedia functions. Without doubt, Sony's first entry in the conveyable gaming market is a multimedia beast, capable of broadcasting PSP audio, displaying PSP pictures, and playing UMD movies.
Of all these sorts of media files, the PSP's UMD films are the most inspiring. The PSP's screen make the PSP a hand held theater that will entertain you wherever you go, whatever time of the day it may be.
However the Sony PSP can't play every video file out there. PSP movies must be in the MPEG-4 format, the same kind of video file the iPhone can play.
What you can do to make sure that the video files on your Computer can be transported and played on your Sony PSP is to convert these video files into PSP flicks. There are a selection of universal video file converters out there. Many of them you have to pay for, others you can get for free.
Once these are converted to MP4 format, you can then transfer your PSP flicks to your PSP unit.
To transfer your PSP flicks to your PSP unit, you may need a USB wire that will connect your PSP to your PC. Once both terminals are synched, look for the MP_ROOT folder on the memory card. Within the MP_ROOT folder, there should be a folder named 101MNV01. If none exist, make one. This is the folder destination for your PSP flicks in MP4 format.
On the dashboard, go to VIDEOS then MEMORY CARD then select among the PSP films you have uploaded the video you want to play.
PSP films make the Sony PSP a truly unique multimedia machine. This video playback capacity is an example of the best features of the Sony PSP, and it distinguishes the PSP console from its technically limited competition.

Superhero Games: Best of the Bunch
April 30, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
One genre of games that you would expect to be more popular than they currently are are Superhero games. Since the earliest days of gaming the superhero topic has been continuously attempted, yet more often than not these games have been damp squibs. Anyone remember the early X Men game back on the NES? That game is famously regarded as one of the worst in gaming history. It seems that, simularly to movie adaptation games, most developers just can't capture the right ethos and mechanics when it comes to superhero games. Therefore, the few gems amonst the rough are to be treastured indeed, and here we present a list of what we feel to be the most accurate, fun and popular superhero games released in recent years;
Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu: This game, released a few years ago on the Playstation 2, is actually a very popular cult classic and remains to be probably the best Batman game ever released. The story involves the villain Sin Tzu, who is utilizing tactics from Sun Tzu's book, Art of War, to steadily take over the city of Gotham. The animation perfectly mimics the classic Animated Batman style from the 90s and offers a host of characters to choose from, including Batman himself, Nightwing and Batgirl. The game mechanics are fairly simple, employing a kind of 3D Streets of Rage style of play, but suits the genre perfectly.
X-Men Legends: This game pleased a wide range of fans by offering a bit of everything; action, adventure and even role play as the player takes control of the famous mutants. As the game progresses more members of the mutant team are unlocked and you are able to organise you team as you see fit. This game was a huge hit when it was released, and paved the way for sequels: X-Men Legends II and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Ultimate Alliance features over 20 playable characters from the Marvel universe, all fan favourites.
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction: This game is widely viewed to be one of the most faithful comic to game adaptations ever produced. Offering a highly inventive and crowd pleasing gameplay, the player is free to rampage through the city in a GTA style open world. There are missions to fulfill, but players are free to progress at their own pace. Unlike in past Hulk games, players are given a myriad of ways in which they can utilize their environment against enemies, with almost every object being destructible able to manipulate. Destroying power sources in cities puts out electricity, including lights, etc. When running, you can pick up enough momentum to run up buildings. What results is a pleasingly open game, with an aspect of freedom and interactivity which would act as a benchmark for superhero games, as this gameplay was manipulated in many later Spider-man titles, amongst others.

Red Alert 3- Playstation trumps Xbox!
April 25, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Red Alert was born out of theCommand and Conquer series way back in 1995, and was an instant hit with strategy fans worldwide. This led to the title being ported to the Playstation and other noted systems, further cementing the popularity it continued to receive. After another sequel was release to vast success in 2000, it took eight years for the third in the franchise to be released on the Xbox 360 and PC. RA3 brought back everything that fans had loved so much about it in the first place: action-packed strategy held together by a knowingly over the top story and characters. The Xbox version suffered slightly when compared to the PC version, seemingly unable to match the high level of textures players had come to expect from the series, but both versions were very well received.
Playstation 3 users long lamented the title, believing the scheduled release onto their console had been cancelled. However, it's now known this is not the case at all. RA3 is indeed being released to the PlayStation 3, entitled the Ultimate Edition no less, and is said to come with features exclusive to this console. Producer Greg Kasavin states that development had been held up so as to quickly finish the PC and Xbox 360 versions, after which the team focused on pushing the PS3's limits before release.
RA3's developers seem to have taken note of the earlier gripes voiced by players, as a lot of the things that let down the Xbox version in particular have been rectified on the Playstation 3. Indeed, it seems this version of the game is better looking than ever before, with the all important textures lovingly crafted, and attention to detail is reassuringly on form. Character animations and movements, aswell as environmental effects have been rendered perfectly.
Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition is available now, and Playstation owners should definitely look into it- the gameplay is as fun as it's always been, and the title has never looked so good. Plus, its rare that a playstation version of a game can claim to trump the Xbox 360 version!

Fallout 3: Success of a Hybrid
March 24, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Looking back to the end of 2008, one game truly dominated the next gen systems: Fallout 3 Unleashed to massive critical acclaim, the title is the third in a long running series set in a post-apocalyptic world in which you must fight for your very survival. On the face of it, Fallout appears to be just another FPS, albeit a very graphically capable one, so why then would this title have caused such a frenzy amongst gamers?

Fallout 3 is actually a lot more in-depth and intelligent than your average FPS, mainly owing to the fact that it blends another well loved genre, the RPG, into its foundations to make a new hybrid game. These two factors actually compliment each other suprisingly well, allowing fans of both genres to explore new gaming territory whilst maintaining the fundamentals of what make each so popular. If you're a fan of gritty, graphically violent shoot-outs then Fallout 3 offers two possible junctions. First is the traditional melee style wherein you're free to blast away at your opponents as you see fit. Alternatively there's the revolutionary V.A.T.S system, which operates something akin to the turn-based sstems you'd normally see in an RPG. This allows for a greater degree of accuracy as you zoom in on an opponent and opens you up to graphic head, body or limb shots, allowing you to literally blast your enemy apart.
The major RPG element is promoted through a virtually open ended world, allowing players to come and go as they see fit, fulfilling side quests at their leisure. An experience and level up system is also integrated, obviosuly augmented through whatever extra missions you undertake. Your style of play also affects your 'karma' level, in a system siumular to Fable. Your deeds throughout the game will take a toll on your overall story, as you become increasingly famous (or infamous) and gain allies and enemies depending on your standpoint. This accumulates to provide alternative endings and thus major replay value.

Console Buying Guide
February 25, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
With a number of console giants available on the current market, it can be a daunting task choosing one as a gift for someone else. Whilst most of the top three consoles share a lot of games and features, there are certain important aspects that also set them apart. Here we present a quick guide to buying the right console as a gift for someone you know.
One of the first things to consider is not just the starting cost, but also the long term cost of a console. Game and accessory prices for consoles are steadily on the rise, with most new Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 games starting out at around £40. The Wii offers games slightly cheaper, but tends to utilize a number of add-ons and inclusive packs that can add to the base price. Most add ons for consoles are not compulsory and so wouldn't normally need to be considered, but with the Wii some of the best games need a number of specific controllers and add ons from the outset.
You may also want to consider gthe recipient, and the type of gaming console that may best suit them. Nintendo have always held a family friendly policy, favouring games that are low on violence and instead concentrating on game that appeal to a younger audience. This isn't to say that mature content isn't available to the Wii, it's just on a smaller scale. Conversely, the Xbox and Playstation counterparts are much more geared towards catering for the mature gamer, with popular yet violent titles such as Gears of War and Resistance.
Is the recipient a fan of any particular developer of company? If he has experience with games on older Nintendo systems, the games on Wii like Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3 may be familiar and fun. However, if he's allowed to play more violent games and enjoys shooters and whatnot, the Xbox 360 has a better offering in that area. Not that he won't find good shooters on the Wii, but they are not as readily available as on the 360, or the PS3 for that matter.
All three consoles have access to online play and additional content that can be downloaded through a console specific marketplace. Most additional and downloadable content comes a small cost. However, whereas gaming online with the Playstation 3 is completely free, the Xbox requires a subscription fee which is renewed every few months. Over time this charge can start to mount up, and seems ludicrous when compared to the Playstation equivalent which is free of charge.
Lastly, it's worth considering taking out some form of care plan for your new console. Xbox 360 in particular has been plagued with bugs and breakdowns since its release, and has become somewhat infamous in that area. It is an extra cost, but offers better peace of mind when you know that great big expensive piece of hardware is at least covered.

First Person Shooters For You!
February 24, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
First Person Shooter is one of the most popular gaming genres out there. Every time a shooter comes out on the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, or PC, we expect more and more in terms of graphics, story and gameplay. In a rapidly growing genre, it pays to know the best from the rest, so we're here to help!
Here are five shooters on the PS3 that blew gamers away.
#5: Far Cry 2
This sequel to the original game has been a long time coming, with years between releases, and this latest venture has done much to improve on the franchise. Far Cry 2 offers a satisfyingly lengthy single player campaign and impressive multiplayer. Stealth is the ploy here, as you creep around heavy forest and jungle settings to catch sentries off guard. The Far Cry series is looking better than ever, and is a must for FPS fans.

#4: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
While the first three Call of Duty games were strictly WWII shooters, 4 took an interesting turn with modern warfare. Single player campaign is a little on the short side, but there's plenty of reason to come back for solid online multiplayer. But one of the most noteworthy aspects of the game is the Call of Duty 4 Engine. In the game's detailed maps, it's possible to shoot a small, empty can lying on the ground and watch it bounce and roll. Also, shoot a car in the right spot and it will explode in a gorgeous display of realism.

#3: The Orange Box
The Orange Box is perhaps the best purchasing deal in gaming history. The package includes Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 expansion episodes 1 and 2, online multiplayer mod Team Fortress 2, and a game made from the Half-Life 2 engine called Portal. So that's five games for the price of one- not bad eh?
As is usual for the series, Half-Life 2 follows scientist Gordan Freeman trying to survive after an outbreak of deadly creatures; the results of science experiments gone very wrong. The entire game takes place from a first-person perspective, as our hero tries to put things right and escape the hell-hole all at once.
Team Fortress 2 is simply a multiplayer mod, with different character classes and abilities. The grahpics have been shaken up a bit this time around, going for a more cartoony, cell-shaded look, a trend that seems to be popular in current gaming.
The last game the package features is Portal, a strange concoction of FPS and puzzle game. Meet the portal gun, which you use to teleport objects and yourself between certain areas. You don't have to be a fan of puzzle games to enjoy this, even if it technically is one. It has to be seen to be believed.

#2: Bioshock
Hailed for its dark and immersive storyline, BioShock takes you deep into the forboding and dangerous world of Rapture. Bioshock combines all the key gaming elements you could want, from pulse- pounding action, wide exploration and intriguing puzzles. The PS3 verson also secures exclusive content and a new difficulty setting. Now, go play it!

#1: Resistance 2
A Playstation exclusive from celebrated developers Insomniac, our top choice here is Resistance 2. The first game's storyline invloved an alternate timeline where instead of WWII taking place, an alien species invaded earth.
With the threat returning once again, Resistance 2 throws you into two gratifying campaigns, alwell as offering the mandatory multiplayer options. Resistance 2's online multiplayer takes the biscuit though, offering a much smoother flowing gameplay than any other around.
With Resistance 2 currently ruling the roost, it can't be long until another title ccomes along in this increasingly popular genre.

Playstation 3 Current Bestsellers
January 22, 2009 by Gamestar · Leave a Comment
Playstation 3 current bestselling games
The dust has settled after the great Christmas rush, and most of us have been locked away playing with the various games and consoles we were lucky enough to acquire throughout the holidays. There were many greats to choose from, some of which are listed here. So if any of these remarkable games slipped through your net this Christmas, consider picking them up with haste!
First of all, there is the global phenomenom known as LittleBigPlanet. LittleBigPlanet's gameplay is comprised of many different types of side-scrolling levels that can be played both alone and via multiplayer mode. The story mode may seem short for a platformer, but it's purpose is merely to introduce you to LittleBigPlanet, a place constructed completely from our imagination. Each piece and part is like a section of a patchwork quilt, and can be modified in any way you please as you customize your own levels; creating your very own weapons, enemies, items and gameplay mechanics. Whatever you want to do, it's up to you.
This is why it is such an amazing game; you are only limited by your imagination. Created levels can be shared online; so as long as there are people willing to build, there is always a reason to come back and play.
Next up we have Fallout 3. Much of Fallout 3's wide acclaim has been due to a sense of extraordinary openness and freedom. There are an amazing number of ways to approach and resolve any given situation. The story takes place after a nuclear disaster as you find yourself to be one of the few survivors. When your father disappears you set off after him, becoming trapped in a series of events and dilemmas, political intrigue and merciless violence.
Fallout 3 is a first-person RPG, featuring an intriguing combat system and almost complete exploratory freedom. In addition, there is a kind of ethics system; the decisions you make will have varying effects on your reputation in different political circles. Where you may have done something decidedly bad in the past, certain people will be impressed by the reputation this brings, while others are not. Your decisions greatly affect the flow of the story, right up to the end of the game, where the ending itself is decided by your actions. In a game like Fallout 3, much replay value and variety awaits.
Then, finally, there is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. If there is any reason to get a PS3 at all, it is Metal Gear Solid 4. The game has been awarded a perfect 10/10 by many gaming review sites, and has even been called by some a hallmark in gaming history. It is now commonly considered to be the best stealth-action game available.
MGS4 is the fourth and last installment in the Solid series. While MGS2 introduced first-person shooting options to the stealth-action gameplay, and MGS3 third-person gameplay, 4 combines both. Over the course of the game, weapons and items can be obtained and customized according to your tactics. MGS4 opens up new possibilities; your weapons and equipment can be either stealth-oriented, combat oriented, or both. But it's the gorgeously told story here that seals the deal. The MGS series has always been known for its cinematic presentation, but Guns of the Patriots takes the cake. All the narrative subtleties and character building engineered throughout four games come to head in this title, bringing about a truly epic storyline that will resonate throughout the industry. It's what makes a game so worth experiencing.
