Sony PSP News from E3!

July 7, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Who declared the Sont Playstation Portable (PSP) was dead? With a new version of the hand held, the Sony PSP Go!, prepared to be released in October of 2009, and with the cost of the game development kit for the console slashed by eighty percent to encourage game developers to form computer applications for the portable gaming unit, the Sony PSP is poised to live out the 10 year lifespan that Sony has foreseen.

And with the just concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2009, the said handheld stole the show by presenting some amazing Sony PSP videos of impending titles which may rock the gaming industry.

What are these Sony PSP videos that stole the show at E3 2009?

1. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Peace Walker is the sole game in the series where all the clones of Big Boss will appear on screen at the same time. What you have seen in the MGS games for the PS, the PS2 and the PS3 will be implemented in this epic title.

2. Gran Turismo: It isn't a dream. It is not a hoax. Shown in the middle of a slew of Sony PSP videos, the audience thought that this game was for the Sony Playstation 3 and it became lost and found its way to the Sony PSP presentation. With 35 race tracks and more than 400 authentic vehicles, Gran Turismo for the PSP will not make any compromises. It will be as thorough, as practical, and as epic as the installments for the PS2 and the PS3.

3. Resident Evil Portable. It is a Resident Evil game, being made from scratch, featuring classic game play in contrast to the rail shooters that were latterly used for the Nintendo Wii. Oh, it's such a fab time to be a Sony PSP owner!

4. Unbound Saga. Beat 'em ups are back, big time! The Sony PSP videos released got a superb boost when game play flicks of Unbound Saga was shown. This game is certain to be a classic.

5. Little Big Planet. Of all the Sony PSP videos shown during the exhibit, Little Big Planet for the Sony PSP was the longest. The video showed game photographs, which led to speculations that the title is nearing its date of release. The graphics are close to their Sony PS3 counterparts and the game play remains unchanged.

PSP Go! The End of Homebrews?

July 2, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Ask any Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) owner what they think is the neatest thing about the hand held system, and you will be surprised by the solution. No, it's not the wonderful graphics made feasible by a superb high-res LCD screen and extraordinary processing power capacities. No, it is not the library of games now available for the Sony PSP. The smartest thing about the Sony PSP is the homebrew community it has provoked. With a slew of 3rd party games and applications made for the Sony PSP, the handheld continued to enjoy brisk sales despite the limited number of games that were being made available in the market.

Now, some months before the release of the Sony PSP Go!, many homebrew developers are in a state of doubt about the way forward for their pastime and passion.

You see, what makes homebrews possible on the Sony PSP are the custom firmware updates that can be employed to replace Sony's official firmware updates. These custom firmware updates avoid the security checks that go with the official ones. Official Sony PSP firmware updates detect homebrews as illegal copies of games, and it blocks their load ups, making it impossible for the player to use them. Custom firmware updates remedy this problem.

But with the approach of the Sony PSP Go! and plans of doing away with UMD support, concentrating completely on downloadable games for future releases, there's a very big possibility some added security checks will be implemented that may make custom firmware updates obsolete. Indeed, without custom firmware updates, piracy on the Sony PSP and the Sony PSP Go! will be a thing of the past, which is good.

But without custom firmware updates, homebrews on the Sony PSP and the Sony PSP Go! will be impossible.

Additional security checks can be introduced to older models via the games themselves, but since you're meaning to use custom firmware updates merely for homebrews and not for anything illegal, you have zilch to fear.

Sony realizes the extreme importance of the homebrew community for the Sony PSP, and may not officially recognize these legal "hacks" to their system, but they can always give their implicit agree to the dedicated men and women who need to extend the functions of the Sony PSP. The homebrew community is here to stay.

Should You Buy An Xbox360 Or A PS3?

July 1, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

We are in the age of the following generation of consoles, and it's quite a battle between Microsoft's highly strong Xbox 360 and Sony's equally impressive PlayStation 3. Which console has a cleared path to victory? Which is a better investment for consumers? Which can provide the best gaming experience possible?

Let's face it, these gaming consoles don't come inexpensive. And in the face of a worldwide recession, we are going to want the best price for our cash. So, which machine will be worth our hard earned dough? The Xbox360 or the PS3?

Alas, the solution to that query relies on five key points that each zealous gamer is troubled about.

1. Which machine has a deeper game catalogue? Games outline game machines, not the opposite. Quality, of course, is more crucial than quantity, but a console that has one hundred games has better possibilities of getting more quality games than a console which has fifty games. When it comes to the range of the game library, the Xbox360 is the definitive winner. Having been released a year prior to the PS3, the Xbox360 has been able to amass quite a number of exclusive titles. WINNER: Xbox 360.

2. Which console offers a more rewarding online experience? Basically, this is a bout between Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. The distinction between them is clear, yet a definite winner is difficult. Xbox Live offers a smooth, optimized multi player experience. The Playstation Network is said to be quite laggy. Xbox Live hosts more demos and freebies than its opposite number. Though the Playstation Network has developed a 2nd Life social networking, avatar-based game called Home, the Xbox Live has locked down partnerships with a slew of digital distributors that will stream content for Xbox360 owners. The most important point here though, is that Playstation Network is totally free, whereas Xbox Live costs quite a considerable amount for monthly upkeep. Considering this, the small technicalities of Playstation Network's occassional lag can definitely be overlooked. WINNER: Playstation 3.

3. Which console is more reliable? The PS3 is known as a particularly durable machine. There are even rumors that the Eastern engineers who test drove the PS3 had it play continuously inside a sauna bath… and the unit fared extraordinarily, well. The Xbox360 is afflicted by endless reports of blunder codes involving three red lights - infamously known as 3RL - which suggest general hardware failure that will render the console unplayable. Though Microsoft has attempted to fix the situation by extending the Xbox 360's warranty to an unique three years, the PS3 is the current console that delivers uninterrupted gaming delight. If you need to play confidently about your console, go for the PS3. WINNER: Playstation 3.

4. Which console is more affordable? As of this writing, the Xbox360 Arcade package costs $199, and the base package costs $299. The Playstation 3 80GB costs $399 and Sony refuses to implement a price cut, saying that they already lose $307 for every unit sold since production of the PS3 is quite pricey. WINNER: Xbox360.

Based on the 4 areas of doubt debated above, there is no definitive winner as both consoles have pros and cons which must be considered.

But the more important question is : is which points discussed mean more to you as a consumer. Consider these and you will no doubt find your answer.

How Best To Grab a Free Playstation 3!

June 27, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Who wouldn't wish to score a free PS3? The PlayStation 3 is, with small debate, this generation's strongest computer gaming console. Many say that it's the most functional as well, as it doubles as a cost-friendly blu-ray disc player, effectively giving you both a gaming and multi-media package all in one.

Unfortunately, this means the Sony Playstation 3 is also the most costly gaming console in the market today. Therefore, the prospect of scoring a free PS3 becomes even more attractive.

How are you to get a free PS3? Here are 4 methods you can try.

1. Join online contests. Many sites sponsor contests that give away free PS3 units, among other prizes. Most of these sites secure their PS3 prizes from Sony itself. Each quarter, Sony releases review copies of the console to highly visited gaming-related internet sites. A few of these websites use these review copies to generate more visitors for their pages, i.e. sponsoring contests that promise the free PS3 as the main prize. Finding such contests is quite straightforward with aid from a search engine.

2. Join offline contests. Sony also provides review copies of the console to print publications. Gaming magazines, for instance, hold monthly contests that reward the winner with a free PS3, among other possible prizes. You can find some luck in joining any of these offline contests.

3. Try affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing requires you to plug the products of a selected merchant using a specially generated associate link which may track referrals and credit them to your account. Each time an individual you referred purchases something from the merchant, you may earn a stated commission. This commission can be in the shape of money, or in the shape of store credits. With no regard for what form the commission will take, you may use the same to get a free PS3. Affiliate marketing does not require lots of work, just the right implementation of correct web marketing strategies.

4. Attempt to secure a review copy. Earlier, we have debated how online and offline publications manage to secure review copies of the console by virtue of the large volume of traffic they generate or the huge readership they can boast of. You can secure your own free PS3 if you have your own gaming-related internet site or if you publish your own newspaper or magazine. The challenge, for an internet site, is to garner at least 10,000 unique visitors every day. The challenge, for print publications, is to gather a mean of 10,000 readers per revealed issue. You will need to burst through these numbers to win Sony's attention so the company can send over a free PS3!

2009: Make or Break for Sony’s Playstation 3

June 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Even the die-hard fans would agree, the SonyPlayStation 3 has been trailing the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 in general sales since the day the PS3 was launched. Sony promised consumers that it will regain the market leadership by the end of 2007 - a leadership it once enjoyed with the Playstation 2 ( PS2 ) - but it didn't happen, mainly because of the lack of console-defining exclusives. Sony guaranteed clients that 2008 will be the PS3's year, but this did not materialize, notwithstanding powerful showings from Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) and Little Big Planet.

And now, Sony has once again promised that 2009 will be the glory year of the PS3.

Its patrons are becoming impatient. Industry leaders believe that 2009 is the "make or break" year for the PS3. 2009, they are saying, is the year which will either mark the PS3 as a deserving entry to Sony's series of console excellence, or brand the PS3 as a market failure despite its clearly superior engineering.

For 2009, the PS3 is banking on 5 key titles that it hopes will ultimately bring the console to the head of the sales charts. These games are:

1. Killzone 2. Released last February, Killzone 2 - one of the PS3's most hyped games, that the industry has enthusiastically awaited since 2004 - is well on its way to saving Sony's reputation as a pace-setter in the Playstation game market. The title sold 2,000,000 copies on its first month, a feat that is actually entrancing for a game which is exclusive to a single console.

2. God of War 3. Since its first installment, Kratos has quickly become the poster boy for Sony, and God of War has quickly become the flagship title for the company's gaming division. Remaining a PS exclusive, the franchise remains both Sony's secret weapon and saviour, always guarenteed to bring in phenominal market.

3. Final Fantasy XIII. The PS3 lost big time when Square-Enix decided to publish FFXIII on the Xbox 360 as well, at least in areas outside Japan. The following installment of the blockbuster Final Fantasy series will continue to be exclusive to the PS3 in its country of origin, and this could definitely help boost the sales for the console. Outside Japan, FFXIII may still win some console sales, as the Final Fantasy franchise has long been related to Sony's machines and given the long playtime provided by the game, issues on the Xbox 360's engineering reliability may force buyers to pick the PS3 version.

4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Its predecessor, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, was a dark horse entry, exclusive for the PS3, which wowed casual gamers with fleshed out, likeable characters and immersive gameplay. The follow up, which is claimed to combine elements of Gears of War, Tomb Raider, and FPS multi-player madness, will be even better than the original, and now that gamers know to look out for it, the title looks set to bring in some serious business. Gamers are excited about Uncharted 2, and this will reflect on the PS3 console sales.

5. Massive Action Game (MAG). Forget Resistance two's 64-player team death matches. Prepare for a very wide scale war with MAG, one which will involve up to 256 players at the same time. Little is understood about the game, however. If it lives up to its guarantees, it can be the PS3 title which will make other FPS multi-player games outmoded. If it doesn't, it is going to be the Kane and Lynch of 2009.

Will these games eventually catapult the Sony PS3 to the throne it once owned unchallenged?

Only time, and your good business, will tell.

All About Sony PSP Films Downloading Changing And Transferring

Whats the coolest thing about the Sony Playstation Portable? It's not its engaging design. It is not even the exceptional WiFi connectivity. The sweetest thing about the Sony PSP is its multimedia functions. Without doubt, Sony's first entry in the conveyable gaming market is a multimedia beast, capable of broadcasting PSP audio, displaying PSP pictures, and playing UMD movies.

Of all these sorts of media files, the PSP's UMD films are the most inspiring. The PSP's screen  make the PSP a hand held theater that will entertain you wherever you go, whatever time of the day it may be.

However the Sony PSP can't play every video file out there. PSP movies must be in the MPEG-4 format, the same kind of video file the iPhone can play.

What you can do to make sure that the video files on your Computer can be transported and played on your Sony PSP is to convert these video files into PSP flicks. There are a selection of universal video file converters out there. Many of them you have to pay for, others you can get for free.

Once these are converted to MP4 format, you can then transfer your PSP flicks to your PSP unit.

To transfer your PSP flicks to your PSP unit, you may need a USB wire that will connect your PSP to your PC. Once both terminals are synched, look for the MP_ROOT folder on the memory card. Within the MP_ROOT folder, there should be a folder named 101MNV01. If none exist, make one. This is the folder destination for your PSP flicks in MP4 format.

On the dashboard, go to VIDEOS then MEMORY CARD then select among the PSP films you have uploaded the video you want to play.

PSP films make the Sony PSP a truly unique multimedia machine. This video playback capacity is an example of the best features of the Sony PSP, and it distinguishes the PSP console from its technically limited competition.

RPGs for the PSP

May 16, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As Sony's PSP begins its promised 'comeback year', it seems one element the handheld is looking to improve upon is the number of RPGs available to the system. These have always been a little thin on the ground, and the demand from RPG fans across the globe seems to have been answered in part. The following games aren't strictly RPGs per say, but do their best to cram in as many elements from the genre as they can;

Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?: More an action adventure game than an RPG, prinny makes it onto our list in that it ties into the SRPG (Strategy Roleplaying Game) world of Disgaea, as players take on the role of one of the many Prinnies. Prinnies are small, penguin-like comedic characters with a penchant for mischief. Don't let the cute image fool you though, these guys can fight, and you're going to need a lot of skill to take on the hordes of evil coming your way. Utilising a fighting scarf that can chain together multiple combos, you have a set time limit in which to complete specific areas and beat the game- fast, intense fun!

Class Of Heroes: A dungeon crawler game that harks to the many MMORPGs of the age, this game is all about character customization and creating a skilled and diverse team. You must take into account: gender, race, and alignment(good, neutral, evil) before breaking down further into classes, which include everything from Clerics to Ninjas. With a massive range of possibilities and combinations, this game provides great replay value as you construct a master team of motley powers!

Phantasy Star Portable: The main attraction to this game is the multiplayer experience it brings, which is quite unprecedented for the PSP. It features in-depth character customization, traditional exploratory elements and RPG style combat along with leveling up. This game definitely provides one of the most faithful and cutting edge RPG experiences available to the handheld medium, and coupled with the multiplayer capabilities this game is arguably the most important release of the year for the PSP.

PSP- Child Friendly!

May 14, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The PSP has never had a great reputation for being a child friendly handheld. This is due mainly to the fact that it is competing against the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi, which have always staked their reputation on being family friendly and clean cut. The PSP also caters for many games considered overly violent, such as Grand Theft Auto and God of War. However, it shouldn't be said that the PSP is completely devoid of titles to offer the younger generations, as these fine examples prove;

Wipeout Pure: Arguably the most popular and outright fun racing game for the PSP, the Wipeout franchise have always delivered the goods on all consoles due to its sheer emphasis on speed. In this game dozens of futuristic hovering race cars rocket through obstacle courses in an attempt to reach first place. Offer both single and multiplayer modes, Wipeout is incredibly fun and, despite the frantic speeds, easily accessible for gamers of all ages.

LocoRoco: LocoRoco offers a fun and simple puzzle game, revolving around tilting a planet in strategic ways in order to control the forever-rolling LocoRoco creatures. With various levels and challenges to try, this game retains playability due to the scope of the gameplay and the cute themes and characters- perfect for little kids looking to get into some puzzle solving fun.

Tokobot: This refreshing platformer revolves around controlling a team of the titular Tokobots, combining both fighting and puzzle elements. This is accomplished by ordering the Tokobots to execute certain formations, depending on the situation at hand. For example, executing "circle formation" cause the bots to surround you, making it possible for you to stomp on enemies and activate large triggers. Utilizing differing formations is the key to progression with this game, as you must shift your tactics dependant on the enemies you face. This game is perfect for kids, throwing back to the fun and immensely playable platformers of the 80s and 90s.

PS3 For The Kiddies!

March 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As successful as the Playstation 3 has been, it is known to be probably the least family orientated next gen console available right now. The calibre of games released onto the system usually cater for the older gaming demographic, and so Sony lose out to obvious favourites Wii, and also the Xbox 360 to a degree, when it comes to appealing to a younger, more family-friendly dynamic. On that note, since you're probably struggling to find something suitable, we've compiled the three best kiddy friendly games the Playstation 3 has to offer.

First up we have Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. As the name suggests, this game brings together all previous installments of the highly popular Lego Star Wars franchise into one great bundle, adding the next gen sheen and throwing in a new setof features and extras to round off the package. Add to this the inclusion of online play support, and you have a neat little game that is fun for the whole family, and suprisingly addictive!

Next is Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. The Ratchet and Clank series have always hovered on the boundary between kids games and more suitable for older players, but T of D has been officially licensed for players under 10, so all is good. Certain elements of the gameplay have been reworked, allowing for a much simpler and straightforward style, whilst maintaining the overwhelming fun we've come to expect from the series. Mixing shooter elements with hints of RPG, the weapons utilized through the game can be levelled up and augmented, allowing more powerful incarnations to be unlocked, something that'll keep the young ones hooked for hours!

51cUSxjNbNL. SL160 PS3 For The Kiddies!

Saving the best for last, we have LittleBigPlanet. aside from the highly entertaining single player campaign, LBP has the highly intuitive and unbelievably fun level editing function, allowing players to create their own environments and load them online to be enjoyed by the community. This may sound complicated, but it's actually very easy and extremely fun. LittleBigPlanet truly is a timeless game, as the possibilities on it are only limited by the minds of the players themselves. There's always something new to try and do, and although the game obviously appeals to players of all ages, it is especially well loved by children and their over-active imaginations!

2009: Year of the PS3?

March 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Sony promise 2009 to be a great year for the PS3, with a slew of great titles announced and released over the next few months, including, shock horror, some exclusives!
Here we take a look at three of the most promising titles due for release;

#3: Infamous

51R3XwGV4LL. SL160 2009: Year of the PS3?

The latest game from developer Sucker Punch, makers of the highly successful Sly Cooper series, is Infamous; an open-world action platformer about the power of electrical currents. In it the main character's body is enveloped in a sort of strange electricity, and he gains the ability to shoot and lob bolts of lightning from his fingertips. Some of the gameplay mechanics have been recycled from Sucker Punch's earlier platformers, like Sly Cooper, but they compliment the game well, and many people are excited to see the grittier and more intense side of their games. Look out for this title sometime in the Summer!

#2: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

41tshjQFyEL. SL75 2009: Year of the PS3?

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was something of a dark horse release for the PS3, but for those who saw through its flaws, it became something of a cult hit. This sequel looks to open the adventures of Nathan Drake up to the wider audience, mainly through bringing back everything that made the original such a hit, whilst polishing the flaws and making the parts that were criticised into working functions. Check out our Uncharted 2 feature for more information on this title!

#1: God of War III

412A%2BurwsVL. SL160 2009: Year of the PS3?

Arguably one of the most popular and successful gaming franchises of recent years, God of War one and two were hailed as gaming masterpieces, fulfilling everything a player could ask for by way of gaming and storyline. God of War 3 is the first to be released on a next gen platform and excitement is reaching fever pitch. Not a lot of information has been given thus far, but we're to expect a much darker tone to earlier incarnations, and you can be sure the destructive combat elements will be taken even further into this title. God of War 3 hasn't been given an official release date yet, but we're optimistic (and hopeful!) that we'll see it this year.
