Looking back in the wake of Christmas, it's easy to see that Rock Band 2 delivered the goods it had been promising. The fun and innovative gameplay system has kept many entertained since the Holiday period, and here we take a look at the runaway success of this title.

When the first Rock Band was released, it made a huge impact on both the music and party game genres, combining the two genres to great effect. While Guitar Hero (developer Harmonix's earlier musical franchise) was all about shredding your way through insane solos, Rock Band broadens the horizons a little by allowing for an entire band to be performing rather than just a singular guitar player.

Harmonix had their work cut out for them in adapting the gaming style to include this wide range of instruments, and as such had to cut back a little on the range. Guitar Hero guitar oriented songs like "Jessica" and "Cliffs of Dover" are no longer an option. Hardcore Guitar Hero fans used to their arduous and complicated solos may therefore feel slightly short changed.

And yet, there is something undeniably extraordinary and exilerating about playing Rock Band with your buddies, no matter how intense or hardcore the music is. The party game thrill is certainly worth the price of admission. This is a point which keeps recurring with Wii titles, the atmosphere and novelty of sgaring the gaeplay between friends helps take a game where it needs to go.

Rock Band 2 has a much more varied and balanced song setlist than the original, featuring well known bands from Megadeth to Journey, and Metallica to Fleetwood Mac. One of the bonus songs even includes That Handsome Devil's definitive hit, "Rob The Prez-O Dent", which is a welcome addition. There are also many more recent bands featured, such as AFI and Lacuna Coil. In all, the setlist comes to a total of 84 songs, two less than Guitar Hero World Tour, which currently holds the record the for the most songs in a rhythm game. However, when considering the earlier points regarding expanded equipment, this is still a very commendable list.

Veteran of either Rock Band or Guitar Hero, this is a title for you. This game package became a best seller for a reason, and that reason is pure quality!
